Dayvon Daquan Bennett, better known by his stage name King Von, emerged from obscurity to prominence after releasing the viral hit Crazy Story and later signing with Lil Durk’s Only the Family label. His storytelling ability won over Lil Durk who signed him to their roster.
Von was shot and killed during an Atlanta nightclub shootout following a fight between two groups of men.
1. He was born in Chicago
Von was born August 9, 1994 in Chicago and became popular on social media after posting his songs. He released two mixtapes before passing away November 6, 2020 due to reported gang-related activity.
Dayvon Bennett was raised on Chicago’s South Side, which is notorious for its high crime rates. After his father Walter E Bennett was shot and killed, Taesha raised Dayvon alone; three siblings from her side and six half-siblings on Walter E Bennett’s were all present for him as part of their upbringing.
Lil Durk signed him to his Only the Family label where his first single, Problems, earned a small following before 2018 saw the launch of Crazy Story which became one of WorldStarHipHop’s most-streamed tracks and chronicled an unsuccessful robbery that resulted in war between Black Disciples and Gangster Disciples street gangs.
2. He was a member of the Black Disciples
King von autopsy was an active member of Chicago‘s largest street gang, the Black Disciples. This gang was founded by David Barksdale during the 1960s when he took control of Devils Disciples and combined them with smaller gangs to form Black Gangster Disciple Nation. Barksdale’s group became active activists, providing free breakfast for Englewood children as well as joining Martin Luther King Jr. for marches during Black Panther Party’s Chicago Freedom Movement at Marquette Park.
King Von began rapping in 2018, and his powerful storytelling attracted the notice of established rapper Lil Durk, who recruited him onto Only the Family label. His 2018 single, “Crazy Story,” quickly went viral, cementing King Von’s place within drill music culture.
To advance his career, Grandson relocated to Atlanta in 2019. His debut mixtape Grandson Vol. 1 was released in September 2019, featuring collaborations with Lil Durk on one track. A follow up album called Levon James followed later that year featuring more of his signature brag-rap style with high profile features like YNW Melly.
3. He was a rapper
Von quickly earned the name of “King of the O-Block.” Just two years before his death, he released his debut LP Welcome to O-Block featuring fellow Chicagoans G Herbo and DqFrmDaO. Two years after that LP’s release – two years before posthumous project What It Means to Be King featuring Lil Durk, Moneybagg Yo and 21 Savage among others; in 2022 came posthumous release What It Means to Be King with cinematic video for single “Robberies”, released Friday June 23rd; watch below!

4. He was killed
Dayvon Bennett, better known by his stage name King Von, was among an elite group of Chicago artists that provided music in some of Chicago’s most troubled communities. Through three critically-acclaimed projects-Grandson Vol 1, Levon James, and Welcome to O-Block-Von harnessed his storytelling strengths with vivid, detailed, immersive, and honest narratives that were rarely found in mainstream rap music.
Von was a young drill star signed to Lil Durk’s Only the Family label who quickly rose to fame with his debut single “Crazy Story”. Just weeks after releasing his debut album in Atlanta, Von was murdered – leaving behind one of rap music’s rising stars who would become one of its next major icons.
The fatal shooting started during a fight between two groups of men outside Monaco Hookah Lounge. A video shows them grappling before shots rang out; Von was hit multiple times before DJ Akademiks confirmed his death on social media. Police issued a statement later stating they weren’t involved and believe Von was shot during initial gunfire between groups before law enforcement responded to the scene.
